Tierra y Territorios is an ongoing project that explores the deep connections between local cultures and natural resources on the island of Gran Canaria.
Shaped by volcanic forces, Gran Canaria’s geological landscape is central to the project. The installations are made using clay collected from Monte Gáldar, an ancient volcano. Local participants are invited to shape triangular tiles, which are then collectively arranged into new Pintaderas—patterned compositions that shift and transform over time.
Unlike traditional Pintaderas, which historically served as symbols of family identity and lineage in the Canary Islands, these new configurations emphasize constant change, collective authorship, and the fluid relationship between people and place.
Through this evolving process, the project reconnects contemporary practices with ancestral knowledge, celebrating the island’s volcanic memory and the living culture it continues to shape.
