Palma Campania (Naples)
La luce sul vulcano
Mi indicherà l’uscita
Al fuoco delle tenebre
Scelgo una nuova vita
The light on the volcano
Will show me the way out
In the fire of darkness
I choose a new life

The artistic intervention “Temporary Theater – Vesuvio,” created in 2024 on Monte Somma in Palma Campania, the mountain situated opposite Vesuvius, is part of a broad series of artistic and performative interventions, always involving local inhabitants from various volcanic locations such as Etna, the Aeolian Islands, Greece, the volcanic deposit near Girona in Catalonia, the Roman Castles around Lake Albano and Lake Nemi – Speculum Dianae – and will continue in the Balearic Islands, Iceland, and the Canary Islands. This offers a comprehensive overview of volcanic sites of great significance, where the ‘spatiality of dwelling’ takes place in a context where confrontation with Nature reigns supreme. It raises the ancient question of who we are, faced with the eternity of the volcano.
The ephemeral installation consists of geometric shapes, with a pentagon base that recalls the structure of basalt and the triangle. Each corner of the structure opens like rays pointing in different directions, symbolizing the connection with the surrounding landscape. At the base of the installation, there are three elements placed in ceramic containers: the red soil of Pozzuoli, the common lava stones from Vesuvius, and water.
During the performance, the artist pours water from the container in front of Vesuvius, a symbolic act evoking ancient fertility cults related to volcanic nature and its regenerative power.
